Trauma Therapy
"The wound itself is what opens the portal to our own healing." - Rev. angel Kyodo Williams
What happens to us is not who we are, but it informs who we become. When you find that your experience of trauma is dominating your life, therapy can help to reduce your distress and support you as you seek healing and meaning from what harmed you. Whether the traumatic experience affecting your life was a one-time event, such as a car accident, or the result of ongoing abuse or maltreatment, seeking therapy is a powerful way to honor yourself and your needs.
I am trained in multiple trauma-informed modalities to address the effects of trauma in therapy. My approach to therapy also centers the understanding that we are all affected by trauma, and that living in a society dominated by oppressive systems creates unique forms of trauma for queer, racialized, and disabled people. These sites of harm open up portals of possibility for liberation and healing. Walking through those portals with a trusted therapist offers both additional support and relational healing that can be transformative and empowering.
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a well-researched form of therapy that is primarily used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). EMDR has been adapted for use in different kinds of therapy and can be particularly helpful for people who have trouble “going into” their emotions. It can be an effective and fast-acting way to decrease the distress you experience from the effects of traumatic events in your life. I am trained in basic EMDR and can either use it as the primary modality of our therapy or incorporate it into our work.
